About the memorial: Cross dedicated to Major General Charles George Gordon who lost his life on the 26th January 1885. Gordon is a controversial figure in today's climate. He was a passionate opponent of the slave trade and did his best to eradicate it from the Sudan in his two periods in charge there. He was also a fierce exponent of colonial expansion.
