To the glory of God in proud and loving memory of Hugh William Fothergill Cooke Major 24th Punjabis who was killed in action near Nasiriyah in the operations in Mesopotamia on July 14th 1915 aged 44 eldest surviving son of Colonel W.S. Cooke of Heatherside in this parish and of Rosa Harriet his wife. A true and gallant soldier. War service Waziristan 1894-5 Chitral 1895 China 1900-1 Mohmund 1908 Great War 1914- Egypt, Persian Gulf:- mentioned in despatches for 'gallant and distinguished service'.
