About the memorial: Rough red sandstone obelisk commissioned by Alice Douglas-Pennant in her will to commemorate her nephew who died in First World War. Lieutenant Alan George Sholto Douglas-Pennant of the Grenadier Guards killed in action on 29 October 1914. He was Aide-de-Camp to the Governor in 1914 at Bengal. Son of Colonel Hon. Edward Sholto Douglas-Pennant, 3rd Baron Penrhyn of Llandegai, and Hon. Blanche Georgiana Fitzroy.
