About the memorial: Within the church on the rear, west wall of the nave. A brass plaque, mounted on a wooden board, commemorating the men of 'T' Company, 40 Royal Marines Commando, who were billeted and trained at Chale, and who perished when HMS Fidelity was sunk by German submarine, U-435 on 30 December, 1942. Note that the Commonwealth War Grave Commission records the date of death for all the men lost is given as 1 January 1943, as opposed to 30 December 1942
