Figure stands in rocky base set on tapering plinth with dedication in Korean and English. Behind the soldier is a pl;ain white, tapering column with the war and dates incised. On the back of the memorial is a map of Korea, on one side an account of the war and on another reference to the UN. All set on paved area in the gardens. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Westminster Walk: After the Japanese were defeated in Korea at the end of WW2 the country was divided, at the 38th parallel, with the USA liberating the south and the Russians taking an interest in the north. In 1950 the north attacked the south resulting in the UN Security Council passing a resolution to assist the south. Because the UK was a full member of the Security Council it was felt by the UK Government that there was a duty to take part. More than 90,000 British Troops were sent to Korea to fight in an unforgiving war with many casualties and a great number of prisoners of war, including 1000 from the UK.. The USA lost 37,000 men and UK just over 1000, but perhaps 1.5 million North Koreans and Chinese died as well as 1million South Koreans. The war included a battle, by the Imjin river, where 600 British soldiers took on 30,000 Chinese troops of whom one third were killed but, while only 59 Britons were lost, most of the other s were captured. Two Victoria crosses were awarded. This memorial is in a “Monument Saturation Zone” but was deemed sufficiently important that an exception was made for it to be positioned here. There was no other significant Korean memorial in the capital for an almost “forgotten” war. The Portland stone memorial shows a British soldier in winter kit looking downwards to indicate a farewell to a fallen comrade. It is perhaps the 1st memorial to have a smartphone code allowing access to more details about the war. Sculptor: Philip Jackson.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Route: Continue through the gardens and find the white Iraq & Afghanistan memorial. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
