PHILIP GURDON,/ MANY YEARS RECTOR OF THIS PARISH;/ WHO WAS KILLED AT GYANTSE, TIBET, ON 6TH JULY1904,/ WHILST GALLANTLY LEADING A STORMING PARTY AFTER/ PERSONALLY BLOWING THE WALL OF THE JONG./ BORN AT WORTHING, SUSSEX, 30TH AUGUST 1878,/ DIED 6TH JULY 1904./ DEEPLY LAMENTED BY HIS FAMILY AND BY/ HIS BROTHER OFFICERS./ THIS TABLET IS ERECTED BY HIS SORROWING PARENTS./ 'The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord.'
