The seven of the fifteen names we are reasonably certain we have identified from the CWGC website seem a pretty heterogeneous group, but two have in common that their parents lived in Bury, Lancs. The word “especially” in the inscription is unusual and suggests it is not necessarily from a church. The names are not in any obvious order. It could have been removed after the Second World War, or when a building changed hands.

John Mortimer Maddox, died 12/08/1916, was a 2nd Lieut. in the Lancashire  Fusiliers. His father was Vicar of St Mary’s Bury and he was Captain of Bury Grammar school.

Robert Norris Wild, died 10/05/15, had parents also living in Bury but was a Pte in the Auckland Regiment NZEF and is buried at Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli. He was 36, so could well have emigrated.

Is seems unlikely to be a coincidence that a Robert Trail, died on 1/10/1918, was also as a private with the Auckland Regiment, but we have found no information linking him to Bury on him.

Tom (Thomas) Mostyn Field, Midshipman, died 31/05/05 when HMS Queen Mary blew up at Jutland, was the son of Admiral Sir Mostyn Field, who was living near Portsmouth at the time but may well have had connections with the northwest.
