About the memorial: A tapering stone built column with an elaborate cap topped by a shrouded bugle. The sides of the column have plain sections with dedications. It all rests on a two part plinth with a wreath on the upper part and names on the lower. It is set on a platform, with several stone bollards delineating its area, by the roadside. The Austerlands’ memorial stands 13 feet 4 inches high from the ground to the top of the column. It is surmounted with a bugle entwined with a cord on which is engraved “The last roll call.” Below it and around the monument are carved the coats of arms of the West Riding Regiment, the Royal Regiment of Artillery, the South Staffordshire Regiment and the Royal Army Medical Corps.
