About the memorial: Captain Courtney was killed in action in Waziristan on 9 April 1937, serving with the 3rd Battalion, 16th Punjab Regiment. The memorial is recorded on the Isle of Man National Inventory of War Memorials: IOM_NIWM_CAS_00022. NOTE: enquiries are ongoing with this memorial. It is definitely described as being in the old St Mary's Church (also known as the Garrison Church - for Castle Rushen - now being an office block) in both the IOM inventory and the IWM record. However, enquiries at the building in October 2017, despite a very helpful response, found no trace of it. The original church was decommissioned in 1985 and the congregation moved to "new" St Mary's church in Hope Street, known as "St Mary's on the Harbour". It is possible that the window was moved there. Enquiries continuing.

Captain Courtney was killed in action on 9th April 1937 in Waziristan (North West Frontier).
He was an officer with the 3rd Battalion of the 16th Punjab Regiment, Indian Army.

On April 9, 1937 during the Faqir of Ipi’s uprising against the British, 45 trucks and a few private cars were carrying officers and men proceeding to Wana on return from leave. The convoy’s escort included four armoured cars - one leading, one in rear and two in the column - and they had to pass through the steep Shahur defile (or tangi) in South Waziristan. The defile is the perfect place for an ambush, there being a narrow strip of road with a vertical cliff rising up almost 500 meters, and a sheer drop down to the river beneath. 

By 7:45 in the morning the lead vehicle had almost reached the far end of the defile when the Mehsuds opened fire, concentrating on the lead vehicles so as to block any escape route. As trucks slid across the road, their drivers dead at the wheel, only one armoured car and the first three trucks were able to get clear of the defile. Since the road was too narrow to turn around, the men left behind had no choice but to fight with only their vehicles as cover.

As many as 300 other tribesmen joined the Mehsuds, matching the British reinforcements, and enabling the tribesmen to keep up their sniping fire through the night before they suddenly disappeared some 24 hours after the attack began. The tribesmen from Tori Khel Tribe had killed 52 soldiers of the British Indian Army, including seven Officers, for the loss of only 16 of their own men. Of the British/Indian casualties were Major Henry William Dayrell Palmer and Captain Myles Bertram Courtney, both of the 16th Punjab Regiment. Both of them are also commemorated on a plaque in Holy Trinity Cathedral Sialkot, India.
