About the memorial: Originally sited inside the Wesleyan Church, James Street, Ebbw Vale. This memorial consists of two white marble plaques that were removed from the church prior to its demolition c.1985. An incomplete list of names from the memorials was reproduced in a history of the Wesleyan church by local historian, Keith Thomas in 1987. Subsequently, both memorials were stored inside the basement of Bedwellty House in Tredegar and there, a decade later they were recorded (in full) by Ray Westlake and subsequently published by the same in 2002 – First World War Graves and Memorials in Gwent Volume 2, pp,171-172. Later, both memorials were re-located to the civic cenotaph in Ebbw Vale where they have been fixed against a wall inside the enclosure, although now exposed to the elements. The names on both rolls of honour have been incised into the stone although, inexplicably on one of the stones only, the black infill has been completely removed thus rendering the inscription extremely difficult to read. The other stone is however extremely easy to read. Aside from weathering, despite the fact that the gates to the enclosure are normally padlocked, these stones are also vulnerable to vandalism or theft; one of the memorial stones originally from another local chapel has been stolen sometime between May 2014 and October 2015.
