About the memorial: A glazed and framed roll of honour. The upright oblong paper roll is highly decorated in blues, reds and gold with allegorical images interspersed with delicate swirls of foliage. At the head is a Christograph ornamented with palm fronds above it and sea shells either side. In the left hand top corner is an angel with the Book of Life. In circles down the left hand sides are peacocks, Crown of Thorns, a chalice, a square with grapes, a bar ornamented with roses - either side of which are a butterfly and bees - thistles, a shamrock and dragons. At the centre is a panel in the style of a twin arched lancet window containing the names. The first group of names, those who died, is in coloured calligraphy with illuminated initials. The lower group, those who served and returned, is in calligraphy with rubricated initials. At the bottom of the roll are depicted a snail, scales, a lamp, a rising sun, a winged horse and an anchor. On the right hand side of the roll are depicted Agnus Dei, Chi Rho, a bar with acorns and oak leaves, a squirrel, a ship, a flying fish, lamps, wheat in a wheel shape, a spider's web and a caterpillar. The frame is ornately carved with beaded inner frame and acanthus leaves on three sides. Floral motif at the four corners. A nearby explanatory plaque describes the various allegorical images incorporated in the design.
