To the glory of God and in loving memory of the two sons of John Preston of Mearbeck and Elizabeth Mary, his wife, daughter of John Proctor of Longpreston. John Starkie Preston, their elder son, 2nd Lieut. 1st Battalion Royal Scots (Lothian Regt.). After fighting at Stormberg and elsewhere in the South African war yielded up his life for his queen and country at Dewetsdorp the 27th June 1900. Aged 21 years.
