About the memorial: Two-stepped base surmounted by short broad pillar and capstone with cornicing. Originally surmounted by a four windowed lantern to light the high street. However the lantern was destroyed when the memorial was knocked down by a tank in 1943. Inscription carved on the sides of the pillar.
