IN MEMORY OF/ JAMES NICHOLSON VC/ 1917 - 1945/ ON THE 16TH OF AUGUST 1940 FLIGHT/ LIEUTENANT JAMES B. NICHOLSON WAS LEADING/ RED SECTION OF NO. 249 SQUADRON FROM/ RAF BOSCOMBE DOWN. AN ATTACK BY/ ENEMY AIRCRAFT WHILST OVER SOUTHAMPTON/ LEFT NICHOLSON WOUNDED AND HIS/ HURRICANE ON FIRE. WHEN ABOUT TO BAIL/ OUT HE SIGHTED AND SHOT DOWN ONE OF/ THE ATTACKING AIRCRAFT, ONLY THEN DID HE/ ABANDON HIS OWN AIRCRAFT. FOR THIS DEED/ OF GALLANTRY NICHOLSON WAS AWARDED THE/ VICTORIA CROSS, THE ONLY MEMBER OF/ FIGHTER COMMAND TO BE SO HONOURED/ DURING THE WAR
