THIS TRIBUTE IS FOR ALL THE PERSONNEL WHO SERVED IN THE LOCAL COUNTY REGIMENT “THE DORSETS In 1702 Colonel Richard Coote formed the 39th Foot which later became the Dorset Regiment and from 1857, young men arrived at Dorchester South and West stations on their way overseas after completing their training in Dorchester Barracks at the Keep (now the Military Museum of Devon and Dorset). Sadly, thousands never made the return journey, many having given their lives in the service of their country. The Dorsets served with great distinction all around the world in every major conflict since their formation over 300 years ago under the proud county motto and rallying cry of “Who’s a feared!”. In this millennium the honour of the Regiment passes to a new generation. They will not fail to honour the county of Dorset, and their country. We commit these memories to history.
