About the memorial: Lt Francis Stuart Long was the son of Rev Francis and Alice Long. He was killed in action on 8th September 1916 during the Battle of Delville Wood. He is commemorted on the south side of his parents' gravestone. He is also commemorated on a plaque on the inside south wall of the church, .on the main village memorial and also on The Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. The inscription on the gravestone is incised and painted black. It is written in capital letters. It is followed by the name of his sister who died only a few years after WW1.
