Sacred to the memory of Lieutenant James Brown 44th Reg who fell on the 13 March 1801; in the 20th year of his age, in the attack made by his Majesty's forces, on the fortified heights before Alexandria in Egypt. Reader, this faithful monument, records, descriptive of his worth, his dying words when on ABOUKERS blood-distained shore he heard, undaunted, the loud cannons roar; and marching boldly onward, met the ball, the fatal cause of his fall; he said, if this be death, I feel no pain; happy I die, such hope of heavenly gain, religion, loyalty, and courage tried, afforded him, who his country died.

Lieutenant James Brown
