About the memorial: Boer War memorial. Dated 1903. Presented by Thomas I Birkin, lace manufacturer. Pink granite obelisk, approx 3m high, on square pedestal with plinth and sandblasted inscription. Stepped square base, with domed corner pedestals. c Historic England listing entry Moved to this site in 1927 from King Street in the city centre to make way for trolley buses.
