About the memorial: Crimean War Memorial Pump, Thorne Memorial Park DESCRIPTION: Crimean War memorial pump of 1856 in cast iron. It is situated approximately 20 meters to west of the north-east entrance to park. It consists of a moulded, circular trough set at foot of Doric column with plaque fixed at its base, cranked handle on right and spouts above the trough and on left near top. Plaque bears the inscription 'SUBSCRIPTION / PUMP / In Commemoration of the / PEACE. 1856 / DRINK AND BE THANKFUL'. The column has 12-sided bands beneath base and capital and handle fixed by a clamp to the shaft with additional linkage above. Rare Crimean War memorial. CONTEXT: This pump is of a similar design to the Crimean War Memorial Pump located in Thorne Market Place (WMO #251433, NHLE #1192983). Both pumps are documented together in the Imperial War Museum's War Memorial Register (#28052). A Google Streetview of the memorial in its setting can be found in the Links.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.
