About the memorial: The monument is an obelisk on two plinths, standing in a lay-by on the east side of the A167 at the nearest point to Standard Hill (the battle site). As the road has been re-alligned it is not clear whether this is stiil the original position although a guide dated 1966 states "on the A167, some 2½miles north of the town" (Northallerton). A bronze shaped shield is let into the face of the monument and this bears a device representing the Bishop's Standard (flag) mounted on a 4-wheeled cart. There has been a plaque attached to the monument below the shield, but this is now missing and was in 1966 when a line drawing of the monument was put in the guide book.
