About the memorial: Wall monument in Town Church, St Peter Port, Guernsey commemorating privateer captain, Nicholas Le Messurier d. 1759 The memorial has a curved pediment with a shell at the apex. The pilasters are topped with reliefs of sunflowers. There is a curved arch above the inscription, carved with shells and foliage. On the apron, a carved cartouche with a crossed sword and victor's palm branch behind it. The architectural surround is in coloured marble.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF CAPt' NICHOLAS LE MESSURIER COMMANDER OF THE PRIVATE SHIP OF WAR THE BELLONA OF TWENTY GUNS BELONGING TO THIS ISLAND WHO BEING ON A CRUISE IN THE NIGHT OF THE TWELFTH OF FEBRUARY 1759 FELL IN WITH A LARGE FRENCH EAST INDIA SHIP AND IN THE MORNING BY DAWN OF DAY GALLANTLY ATTACKED AND ENGAGED HER BUT ABOUT AN HOUR AFTERWATDS WAS UNFORTUNATELY SLAIN. THE PRIVATEER BEING GREATLY SHATTERED TO HER MAST AND RIGGING HAVING SEVERAL SHOT BETWIXT WIND AND WATER AND MANY MEN KILLED AND WOUNDEDWAS OBLIGED TO SHEER OFF AFTER HAVING GREATLY SHATTERD THE ENEMY. HE WAS A NATIVE OF THIS ISLAND. BORN THE 16TH MAY IN THE YEAR 1731 AND ALWAYS BEHAVED LIKE A BRAVE AND DILIGENT OFFICER TO WHOSE MEMORY THE OWNERS OF THE PRIVATEER HAVE EERCTED THIS MONUMENT OUT OF GRATITUDE FOR HIS GREAT SERVICE. RESTORED BY A FEW GUERNSEYMEN 1906
