About the memorial: this is a rectangular stone tablet for Carruthers family on the north wall of the chancel in the old church of St Martin's. It appears to be the only memorial there. In Lady St Mary church in Wareham there is another family plaque including Ned Carruthers WMO253707

(sic) CARRUTHERS/ A SUPERANNUATED SURGEON OF THE ROYAL NAVY/ AND MANY YEARS A PRACTITIONER IN THIS BOROUGH/ WHO DIED OF AN APOPLECTIC FIT ON THE 21ST DAY OF MAY 1799/ OBT. 81 YEARS / ALSO ISABELLA CARRUTHERS WIFE OF THE ABOVE/ WHO DIED ON THE 26TH DAY OF FEBRUARY 1796/ OF A TYPHUS FAVOUR (sic) OBT. 39 YEARS/ ALSO TO THE MEMORY/ OF THREE DAUGHTERS AND A SON WHO DIED IN THAIR (sic) INFANCY/ AND CAPTAIN NED CARRUTHERS OF THE ROYAL/ MARINES WHO WAS DROWNED IN HIS MAJASTIYS (sic) SHIP/ INVINCIBLE OF 74 GUNS OF NORTH YARMOUTH/ ON THE 17TH DAY OF MARCH 1801/ OBT. 36 YEARS
