About the memorial: Oval cartouche in an alabaster surround with floral and scroll decoration and angels head on each side. The arms of Stanhope above text, regimental badge of the grenadier guards beneath the surround.

Richard / Philip Stanhope / Captain Grenadier Guards / Born 16th Jan: 1885; killed in/ action 15th Sept:1916, at the / battle of the Somme, France / Younger Son of Arthur 6th Earl / Stanhope & of Evelyn his wife. / Squire of Revesby Abbey, Lincs / 1907 - 1916. Brave, eager and / unselfish, he was greatly beloved. // "E'en as he trod that day to God / so walked he from his birth/ in simpleness & gentleness / and honour and/ clean mirth."
