THIS PLAQUE COMMEMORATES/ THE DESPERATE FIGHT/ AGAINST THE JAPANESE BY ALL RANKS/ 2nd Bn THE LOYAL REGIMENT/ FROM 13th TO 15th FEBRUARY 1942/ IN THE FINAL BATTLE/ IN DEFENCE OF SINGAPORE./ THE BATTALION COMMAND POST/ WAS IN THIS BUILDING/ WHICH HAD BEEN THE PEACE-TIME HOME/ OF THEIR SERGEANTS MESS./ LOYAUTE M'OBLIGE. Inserted inscription: This commemorative plaque was placed in the/ Sgt's Mess of Gilmour Barracks, Singapore/ When Commonwealth Forces were withdrawn from/ Singapore in 1968, Lt Col B Whitehead/ removed it and brought it to Preston for placing in/ the Regimental Museum.
