About the memorial: On Saturday 3 September 2016 Bugthorpe War Memorial Institute is holding a dedication ceremony as the Stone Roll of Honour is revealed. The British Legion will be in attendance and the stone will be revealed by World War Two veteran Mr John West whose father is on the memorial. Replacing the paper copy, master stonemason Matthias Garn has produced a permanent memorial stone to remember those who left the village to go to war. Awarded through HLF’s First World War: then and now programme Bugthorpe War Memorial Institute received £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the project, Conserving and Commemorating Bugthorpe War Memorial Institute and its Origins. Research will also be shared relating to the names and lives of the 22 people of Bugthorpe who fought in the First World War. Giving up their own lives That others might live in freedom Let those who come after see to it that his name be not forgotten
