The Book is written on heavy paper and is a modern replacement for the original book which was damaged by water and is held by the church warden off site (there is a small card giving contact details in the church). The replacement was made by David J Newton who taught himself to do illumination and script to make this replica. There are about 10 pages of script inside. The casket has a small brass plaque in the lid saying that "This casket was presented to St Mary's Ch Alne by Laura Elizabeth Alice Gunter widow of the late Major General James Gunter and her son Geoffrey Robert Gunter of Aldwark Manor in this Parish November 11th 1918".
