About the memorial: Six trees were planted in the Centenary Memorial Field (previously known as the Village Playing Field), one for each of the men from the village who gave their lives in WW1 and WW2. The memorial plaque was dedicated in a village ceremony at 0730 on 1st July 2016, exactly 100 years after the first wave of allied troops went over the top on the disastrous first day of the Battle of the Somme. The trees and plaque were paid for by public subscription. Three of the trees have steel tree guards. They were planted to commemorate the following men: Sergt W TOWNSEND Royal Warwickshire Regt - Cedar of Lebanon tree; Pte L G HOLIDAY Hampshire Rest - Large Leafed Lime tree; Pte R J FARMER Royal Berkshire Regt - Black Walnut tree; Pte H J OSBORNE Royal Berkshire Regt - English oak tree; Pte W J EUSTACE Canadian Rifles - Canadian Red Maple tree; Pte G A Wilkinson Royal Fusiliers - Scots Pine tree;

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

CENTENARY MEMORIAL FIELD dedicated to the MEN OF DRAYTON ST LEONARD and all those who died in the two World Wars 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 "If I should die, think only this of me: That there's some corner of a foreign field, That is forever England." (R Brooke Nov 1915) In November 2015, six trees were planted in this field by grateful villagers to commemorate the men whose names are inscribed on the village war memorial. This plaque dedicated at 0730 in 1st July 2016, 100 years after Zero Hour on the Somme in 1916.
