About the memorial: A rough surfaced rock from Ireland (Kilkenny) representing the colour of coal (when wet) and the toughness of pit work. On its front is an image of a colliery gantry in relief, on one side an incised descriptive text,. In front of the stone is a seat and to one side an information plaque on the sloping top of another plinth incorporating images of miners equipment in relief. There are 3 trees nearby to indicate the areas in Britain where the boys worked (oak, ash & pine).
