About the memorial: On the amalgamation of the Devon & Dorset's into the Rifles local people led by the Mayor recognised the hurt and concern this had on the old soldiers and their families, decided to produce two new War Memorials, to show the old soldiers of the Dorset's (amalgamated into the Devon & Dorset's previously) and Devon & Dorset's their full support and recognition of past sacrifice, £11,000 was raised in small donations from Shaftesbury people and this wonderful War Memorial for them and the new Regiment was commissioned and dedicated. The Poem below recognises the loss of Rifleman Allen and others that followed from the new Regiment.

To My Son My dear Son, although I cannot see you, Through this screen, I know you are really there. I bring you into reality, Like magic in the air. Your voice is like an angel, Though I really do not hear. Your hugs as warm as any, Of the loved ones I hold dear. You are always there for comfort, Or with words of cheer. Though you are far away, I will always have you near. You are a very special son and friend, Like none I have ever known. As long as you are in my heart I’ll never be alone.
