Can you help?

In 2018, WMT gave a grant towards this war memorial. As it has been a number of years since the grant was given, we would like an up-to-date condition survey and photographs to be added to this war memorial record. Can you help?

Status: On original site
Type: Freestanding
Location: External
Setting: Within a garden/park/churchyard/enclosure/Marketplace
Description: Lychgate
Materials:
  • Stone Stone (any)
  • Timber Oak
Lettering: Inscribed on a plaque
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
About the memorial: Memorial Lych-Gate built in 1920, carrying carries a poignant message of thanks for the enduring peace that had passed since Armistice Day. The Lych-Gate is in a poor state of repair and per the condition report submitted on 19 March 2019, it is now unstable. The Church Architect has provided a specification for works to renovate and replace where necessary the oak structure, roof shingles and the South Wall (made of flint) which is currently leaning. It is feared that the structure will not last another winter and it has been taken out of use, until the work can be completed. A War Memorial Trust grant application will be shortly submitted to help fund the work in 2019.

To the glory of God in humble thankfulness for his great mercy in granting us peace. Novr 11th 1918 - June 28th 1919. This is on the North Wall of the Lych-Gate which remains stable and there is not intention to disturb this wall in the renovation works. See photograph attached for the inscription.

A stone cross (under a separate memorial record WMO255052) commemorating the 29 individuals (including 1 nursing sister) who gave their lives in World War 1 is nearby in the Church grounds.
