About the memorial: Listed Grade II Unveiled Sunday 25th September 1921 Cross with enclosed steps (seats) and at the top statues (worn) of 8 virtues Listed 19.09.1977 THE SQUARE 1. 5303 1914-1918 War Memorial SP 7387 1/48 II GV Designed by Messrs. Brown and Fisher of Wellingborough. Earlier C20. Base of Memorial approached down 2 steps. Forms stepped plinth, cross shaped, with metal tablets bearing the names of the dead set in angles between cross arms. Polygonal shaft in form of preaching cross with carved heads and figures surmounted by further cross. Set in centre of south-western angle of The Square.

Raised lettering records on panel (54.5 inches x 24 ins / 138 x 61cm) between two acanthus scrolls is inscribed with letters and lines in relief: TO THE GLORY OF GOD / IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE / OF ALL IN THE PARISHES / OF MARKET HARBOROUGH / GREAT & LITTLE BOWDEN / WHO SERVED IN THE /GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 / THIS CROSS IS ERECTED AS / AN ENDURING MEMORIAL / OF THE FALLEN / THEIR NAME LIVETH.

Four bronze plaques around the back of the seats/.steps ( 40 X 10 inches 101.5 x 25.5 cm) with about 60 names on each in relief;
