About the memorial: On the west wall of the south transept. Pte Slater was a servant to Lieutenant T.E.R. Symons, Grenadier Guards, who erected this memorial in memory of his servant, who 'carried him to hospital through bullets and artillery fire'. Another memorial was erected to Pte Slater in Much Dewchurch, Hereford, where the Symons family had an estate.
