IN LOVING MEMORY OF/JOHN ARTHUR GREER, LT, 3RD WEST INDIAN RGT/ELDEST SON OF GEORGE AND SYDNEY GREER/HE WAS ATTACHED TO THE WEST AFRICAN RGT FOR SERVICE WITH THE/ASHANTI FIELD FORCE, AND FELL MORTALLY WOUNDED, WHILE CHARGING/AT THE HEAD OF HIS MEN, DURING A NIGHT ATTACK ON A REBEL CAMP/NEAR KUMASI, ON THE 7TH AUGUST 1900 AGED 23/"THE GOLDEN EVENING BRIGHTENS IN THE WEST/SOON SOON, TO FAITHFUL WARRIORS COMES THEIR REST."
