About the memorial: The 314 hectare estate was acquired in 1948 through the National Land Fund (NLF). The NLF was set up in 1946 to purchase places of significant beauty or heritage value as a lasting memorial to those who gave their lives in war. It transferred these properties to various organisations to maintain them and provide public access. With regard to the house the National Trust guidebook in 1997 states-"On his [George Browne] death in 1914, Townend was left to his surviving daughter, Clara Jane, who died in 1943. The property was bequeathed to a cousin, Richard Browne, who in 1944 sold it to Mr Oswald Hedley. When the latter died the following year it was accepted by the Treasury in satisfaction of Estate Duty and transferred to the National Trust in 1947. At the same time the Trust bought the contents of the house from Mrs Hedley, and also acquired, through the Treasury, Townend Farm with its fine 17th century barn."
