About the memorial: White marble scroll affixed to a white anchor on a black marble rectangle.Lettering in black. All 500 hands were lost when the ship of the Fleet sank because of poor design.There are also memorials for the ship's crew in St Paul's and in Westminster Abbey.

Sacred to the memory of James Desborough Kirkness, Sub. Lieutenant R.N. second son of the Rev. W.J. Kirkness, Rector of Minster, Forrabury, aged 22. He was lost with 499 other gallant British sailors, in H.M.S. 'Captain' which foundered off Cape Finisterre, on the morning of Septr. 7th 1870. "Jesus said - I am the Resurrection and the Life." John. XI. 25. "And the sea gave up the dead which were in it." Rev. XX. 13.
