About the memorial: Round cairn made of stone from Norway and Shetland. On top of cairn is a sculpture of the Andholmen, one of the boats used as a Shetland Bus. It is depicted riding the crest of a wave. On the sides of the cairn is a dedicatory plaque at the top. below it are four metal name plaques.The Shetland Bus was a wartime undertaking whereby Norwegian exiles undertook dangerous journeys to and from their homeland, at first in fishing boats, later in specially prepared craft. A book on the subject was published in the 1950s.
