About the memorial: Proposed to carry out the following works to the Parish Church of St. George Stamford as a memorial of the Great War namely: To provide and erect behind the altar of the said parish church a Reredos and Retable with paneling of oak and also to erect on the North and South walls of the chancel of the said parish church oak paneling with an inscription on the paneling on the South side in memory of the parishioners who have died for their Country in the Great War, to the plans of Mr. Henry F. Traylen. Faculty Book 13, page 451, 3-2-1920 The Bishop of Lincoln, preaching at a war memorial Dedication Service at St. Georges Church, Stamford, on Friday Night. Extract, Lincolnshire Echo, 26 April 1920, pg 3. The panelling covers the entire east end and sides of the sanctuary below window height except for the piscina which has been left exposed. In two tiers, the upper tier is finished with carvings in a Tudor style with roses. The Reredos is in the same style but rises higher, .the memorial panel forms an extension to the panelling on the south side, and measures 183cm by 76cm Note: This church contains one of the very few “north end” altars left in the country and still apparently in use as such.
