About the memorial: Memorial in the 12th Century church remembers two separate aircraft accidents that occurred on the slopes of the South Downs above the hamlet during WWII. Of relevance to Bomber Command is the first loss, that of 617 Sqn Lancaster DV382 KC-J that crashed nearby on 13/02/44. Amongst the eight lives lost, were the Sqn's Intelligence Officer along with a member of W/C Guy Gibson's original crew from the Op CHASTISE raid, 16-17 May 1943
