About the memorial: Ship's bell in the Council Chamber, presented in association with 1942 Warships Week. For some reason the IWM Register has separate entries for bell and plaque, 64544 and 64545. HMS Witherington was an Admiralty Modified W Class Destroyer. The name Witherington and the design of the crest are inspired by the Ballad of Chevy Chase, when Richard Witherington had his legs cut off and continued to fight upon his stumps.
