About the memorial: Memorial to Colonel Hugh Champneys Thurston, CB, CMG, Army Medical Services. Third son of Obed Edward and Louisa Margaret Thurston of Kington, Thornbury. Baptised on 20 June 1862. Educated at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London. Qualified LRCP (Lond) and MRCS (Eng) in 1884. In 1884 he became a assistant resident officer and pathologist at the Bristol Infirmary. Joined the Royal Army Medical Corps as a surgeon in 1887. He served in Burma in 1891 with the Wuntho Field Force under Sir General Wolsley and received the Indian Frontier Medal with a clasp. Hugh was promoted Major in 1899 and served throughout the Boer War between 1899 and 1902. He was present at the Relief of Kimberley. He was mentioned in dispatches and received the Queen’s medal with five clasps and the King’s medal with two clasps and honoured with the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (C.M.G.). He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 13 Jun 1911 and Colonel on 1 Mar 1915. He was Senior Medical Offcer of the Royal Military College, Sandhurst 1911-1914. In the First World War he served in France, was mentioned in dispatches and received the Companion of the Most Honourable Order of Bath (C.B.) on 4 Jun 1917. He retired after the end of the War on 1 Mar 1919. He married Susie Steele at St Paul’s Church, Clifton in Feb 1896. They had two children, Ursula Frances Margaret born in Colchester in 1899 and Hugo John Steele Thurston born 1904. He died as a result of his war service in St Margaret’s, Babbacombe aged 57 years. He is buried in St Mary the Virgin Parish Churchyard, Thornbury. He is also commemorated on a memorial plaque in the Royal Memorial Chapel, Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Surrey.

In loving memory of Hugh Champneys Thurston, CB, CMG, Colonel AMS. Third son of Obed Edward and Louisa Margaret Thurston of Kington in this parish who departed this life 17th August 1919 aged 57. He served in the Wuntho Burma expedition 1891, the South African War 1899-1902, the European War 1914-1918. "Blessed are the pure in heart".
