About the memorial: Memorial to Major Percy Belcher Strafford, 2nd Battalion the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment). Son of Robert James and Louisa Mary Strafford (nee Belcher), of Liverpool. Husband of Edith Mabel Strafford (nee Chapman), of 25, Wilbury Road, Hove, Brighton (Married 26th June 1906). Educated at Malvern College 1882-1890. Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Duke of Wellington's Regiment as 2nd Lieutenant 1892. Promoted to Lieutenant 11 Sep 1895. Served in the Second Anglo Boer War 1899-1902. Mentioned in Despatches (twice), Queen’s Medal with 4 Clasps, King’s Medal with 2 Clasps. Deployed to Belgium with his battalion with the BEF at the start of WW1. Mentioned in Dispatches. Killed in action aged 41 years. Buried in grave I.C.13. of Hautrage Military Cemetery, Saint-Ghislain, Arrondissement de Mons, Hainaut, Belgium.
