About the memorial: A memorial garden area which has a coastal theme, through which the visitor walks along a curving path. The dominant feature of the memorial garden is a large stone boulder onto which a sculpted figure of a lifeboatman and life-ring have been carved. Behind the statue is a flagpole with the RNLI flag. Other aspects of the memorial garden include wooden groynes and stone monoliths which represent respectively crew members going out on a rescue mission, a stone cairn representing rescued seafarers etc surrounded by lifeboatmen and a final monolith representing crews and survivors returning to the safety of harbour and their families. The garden planting and colour scheme describes the sea in calm and stormy conditions. A small square blue metal plaque is fixed to the front of the stone boulder. (c IWM Register) Of course many of the RNLI's rescues have been in peacetime, but they played their role I the wars as well.
