About the memorial: Memorial to Lieutenant Walter Cecil Luce, 2nd Volunteer Battalion the (Duke of Edinburgh's) Wiltshire Regiment. The youngest son of Colonel C R Luce, of Halcombe, Malmesbury. Educated at Clifton College. Commissioned into the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment in May 1896. Promoted to Lieutenant in 1899. He volunteered for service in South Africa during the Second Anglo Boer War. Deployed with the Volunteer Service Company, arriving in the Cape in Jan 1900 and joined the 2nd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment. He was involved in much fighting in the Orange Free State and afterwards to the north of Pretoria. He died of enteric fever (typhoid) at No 12 General Hospital, Springfontein, Orange Free State.
