About the memorial: From 'Richmond Herald', 4th December 1920: "Following the distribution of certificates, gifts to the church were received by Mrs. Barkby, consisting of...a silver cup filler presented by Miss Ena Mason, silver bowl for communion table, presented by Miss May Mason, and a pulpit hymnal, presented by Mr. and Mrs. Mason as a thank-offering for the recovery from injuries received on active service by their son, Lieut. B. Castle Mason, late R.A.F. ..." It's not clear from the wording whether the thank-offering is just the hymnal, or includes the gifts from Lieut. Mason's sisters as well. Lieutenant Mason had just spent four years in hospital after a bad crash, but recovered, continued flying and went on to serve in WW2.
