About the memorial: Austrey is a village in North Warwickshire, within a short distance of the borders of Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire. At the heart of our village is St Nicholas Church a grade II listed building. The church is not only a focal point for worship, but is central to many community activities, and the sound of the church clock chime is a valued part of our village identity. The Church clock holds particular importance, to our community, as a permanent memorial to those who served and gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/19040. The current clock was dedicated in 1923, as a war memorial to the men of Austrey that died in battle during the First World War, with a plaque inside the church to commemorate those lost. Today, the responsibility to maintain and conserve this war memorial falls under the responsibility of Austrey Parish Council, thus ensuring that the clock, its history and the sacrifices it represents continues to be preserved for generations to come. In April 2024 extensive works were carried out by Smith’s of Derby to conserve the clock faces, ( Smith’s are the same specialist clock repairers who installed the memorial clock, just over one hundred years ago, and they have continued to maintain it ever since). In August our clock fell silent again, and our Chairman Cllr Tony Treadwell arranged for Smith’s to investigate the fault . Smith’s Of Derby Report There has been excessive wear on the counter minute wheel, due to extreme weather conditions blowing the dirt and rubble around the dial works in the belfry. They advised, at the time, that the cover for the dial works wasn’t substantial enough and a joiner should be contacted to make a new, fully sealed timber frame. They suggest that the first meeting with our clockmakers should include a joiner, to discuss the best way forward and to ensure that any timber frame should not interfere with any mechanism inside the new box. Smith’s reported that the clock hands would need removing from rope access. This requires 2 technicians to comply with H&S legislation . Once the dial is removed, the works to withdraw the mechanism can proceed, repairs would be undertaken off site at Smith’s Of Derby premises. They also noted that the bevel set above the clock drive hands requires a 5 degree adjustment, which would be carried out on the return visit. Total cost £5,538.00 + VAT .
