About the memorial: Until 2014 the complete battlefield cross lay on his parents' grave. The memorial in the chapel is a metal cross with the ends bifurcated and pierced possibly re-used hinges which was previously attached to the wooden cross. It is now mounted on a vertical wooden beam which is a modern addition . At the crossing point a lozenge shaped metal plate with the dedication comprised of lettering which was probably hammered into the metal plate , The plate is battered and chipped . Draped over the cross is a strap and just below the wooden beam is a manuscript note on paper with further information . Photographic evidence shows that the metal cross and plate was initially attached over the original GRU/IWGC battlefield cross which was discarded when exposure to weather caused severe degradation (see images ) The original wooden section has been left on the grave.
