About the memorial: The memorial is a stone cross supported on a pillar with a square base. This is set on a stepped octagonal plinth. On the north-west face of the column there is a sword carved in relief.

The north-west face of the base bears the inscription 'IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/OF/STOKE BISHOP MEN WHO GAVE/THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/1914-1918/'HE THAT DOETH THE WILL/OF GOD ABIDETH FOR EVER'[a quotation from the oratorio The Prodigal Son by Sir Arthur Sullivan]/'WHO STANDS IF FREEDOM FALL/WHO DIES IF ENGLAND LIVE' [a quotation from the poem 'For All We Have and Are' by Rudyard Kipling].' The same face of the upper step of the plinth has the inscription 'ALSO IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR/1939-45.'
