Can you help?

In 2015 WMT gave a grant towards this war memorial. As it has been a number of years since the grant was given, we would like an up-to-date condition survey and photographs to be added to this war memorial record. Can you help?

Status: On original site
Type: Freestanding
Location: External
Setting: Within a garden/park/churchyard/enclosure/Marketplace
Description: Calvary
Lettering: Incised
About the memorial: Consecrated on Sunday June 20th 1920, it is an oak cross with the figure of Christ carved from teak, under a roof. This surmounts a grit stone plinth above a three stepped limestone base. The style echoes the design of the 13c preaching cross nearby in the churchyard. There are no known records detailing the makers, though there is good reason for conjecture as to the craftsmen employed as experts in church furniture describe the carving of Christ as 'very fine work'. The family who paid the largest proportion (conjecture) towards the cost, restored the church 45 years earlier, employing the vaunted carvers Farmer and Brindley. Trying to find some evidence to corroborate this connection led to the publishing of a letter. This was passed to Commander Michel Evans whose grand-father was born in Putley, killed in Belgium in1917 but not remembered on any UK memorial. Pte James Evans was added and the memorial rededicated on July 5th 2015.
