About the memorial: The war memorial in the village of Hatfield Heath in western Essex, near the county border with Hertfordshire, is a Portland stone wheel cross on a plinth on a trapezium shaped base with splayed sloping faces. There is a hemisphere of stone in the middle of the cross. The names of the fallen are carved on the faces of the plinth and on the base. On one face of the base is carved a laurel wreath in half relief, with a crown in the centre. The memorial stands on a square gravelled area within York stone slabs behind a post and chain fence on the Heath.
