About the memorial: The Scotch stone war memorial for Brinsworth and Canklow is a Latin cross with a decorated shaft with inscriptions on the shaft and plinth. The memorial stands on a two-stepped base and a further plaque is attached to the steps. The memorial is on a raised platform and is surrounded by bollards and a chain fence in the graveyard of St George's Church on Brinsworth Lane. The two small communities of Brinsworth and Canklow joined forces in early 1919 by forming a committee to raise funds for the erection of a war memorial to the brave men who fought and died in the Great War. Between March 1919 and July 1923 a number of meetings were convened at the Brinsworth council school reporting on the progress being made by the committee. By February 1923, sufficient funds had been raised and the task of who was going to make the memorial, who was going to unveil and dedicate it, had been decided. The unveiling was arranged for 1st July 1923, to coincide with the great battle of the Somme, Mr T.W. Grundy M.P. for Rother Valley was to unveil the memorial. The Lord Bishop of Sheffield (Dr Burrows) was to dedicate it. The congregation gathered at the Brinsworth council school where they paraded to St George’s Churchyard led by the Brinsworth and Canklow band, the 5th York and Lancaster Regiment formed the guard of honour, on arriving at the church the congregation was so large, the church was filled to capacity with a large number of people having to stand outside. After the service, all the people gathered around the memorial cross, in the churchyard for the unveiling. The cross itself was 12 foot tall made of polished scotch stone, the base consisting of ornamental posts was 8 foot x 6 foot, made of Yorkshire stone, and contained the 57 names of those who gave their lives. The whole memorial was made by Tyas & Guest of Swinton at a cost of £150. A final meeting was held on Tuesday 20th October 1923 in the Brinsworth council school to add a finishing touch to the memorial which had been suggested by the relatives of the fallen, that being to surround the memorial base with curb stones, this was accepted by the war memorial fund committee and was duly carried out.
